Diploma Lessons

We offer lessons for piano diplomas from ABRSM, Trinity College of London and London College of Music (LCM). These are taught based on the current syllabus, and customized to individual students’ learning needs.
 
These diplomas are suitable for post grade 8 students, aspiring piano teachers and musicians who wish to be equipped for future musical endeavours, or those who seek the satisfaction of achieving a personal goal.

The various piano diplomas offered by the schools for international diploma examinations are summarised below, subject to change. For more details, please refer to the official websites in the respective links.

PERFORMANCE DIPLOMA

A natural progression for students after Grade 8, the piano performance diploma improves one’s professional standard of performance and musical understanding.
ABRSM
ABRSM performance diplomas are well rounded with tasks that include compiling a balanced recital programme and finding editions that best suit your interpretation, building conversational confidence for music, and putting on the best possible performance.
The Performance Diploma is available at three levels:
• DipABRSM: Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree
• LRSM: Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree
• FRSM: Equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university (Masters degree)

TRINITY
Trinity’s performance diplomas provide a pathway to professional musicianship, focusing exclusively on the planning and performance of a recital.
The Performance Diploma is available at three levels:
• Trinity Associate (ATCL): Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree
• Licentiate (LTCL): Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree
• Fellowship (FTCL): Equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university (Masters degree)

LCM
LCM performance diploma focuses on security of technique, and the ability to communicate tangible sense of interpretative awareness and musicianship.

• LLCM: Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

TEACHING DIPLOMA

Teaching diplomas are suitable for current & aspiring piano teachers.
ABRSM
These diplomas focus on the teaching of piano as a practical activity. Through live and written sections, you will be examined in your approaches to teaching, ability to give competent practical demonstrations, and your understanding of repertoire. ABRSM teaching diplomas also cover educational theory & philosophy, curriculum studies and aspects of educational administration.
The Teaching Diploma is available at three levels:
• DipABRSM: Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree
• LRSM: Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree
• FRSM: Equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university (Masters degree)

• Written Submission

Trinity teaching diplomas cover planning and delivering programmes of piano teaching appropriate to individuals and small groups from beginners to advanced players, and evaluate your own effectiveness as a teacher with full responsibility for the learning environment.
The Performance Diploma is available at two levels:
• Trinity Associate (ATCL) Principles of Instrumental: Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree
• Licentiate (LTCL) Instrumental: Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree
  1. Individual or small instrumental groups
  2. Music Practice: Teaching (classroom group)

Tasks include:
• Teaching experience
• Practical applications (demonstration, initiative test and viva voce)

LCM diploma focuses on demonstrating the skills and understanding required by a competent piano teacher that is accomplished and confident of teaching skills, your performance technique which demonstrate pieces with clarity and authority, and your ability to communicate appropriate knowledge and understanding with clear verbal articulacy.
The Teaching Diploma is available at three levels:
• DipLCM: Equivalent in standard to a first year undergraduate

THEORY DIPLOMA

Theory diplomas provide a very good supplement to diplomas in performance and teaching.
Note: ABRSM does not offer diploma level music theory exams.
TRINITY
Trinity’s music theory diplomas require a broad understanding of theoretical and analytical concepts and procedures, in addition to a wide-ranging knowledge of music history in the Western classical tradition.


The Theory Diploma is available at two levels:
• Trinity Associate (AMusTCL): Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree
• Licentiate (LMusTCL): Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree
Tasks include:
• Section A: Musical skills
• Section B: Prescribed works
