Performance, Teaching and Theory Diplomas

(ABRSM, Trinity, LCM) 

Encouraging further stimulus and progression in Performing, Teaching or Theory, the respective piano diplomas from ABRSM, Trinity College of London and London College of Music (LCM) are taught based on current syllabus. 

 

Piano diploma lessons are customized based on your individual level and learning needs. 

 

Lessons are taught by John who holds a Diploma in Licentiate of the London College of Music (LLCM) and Diploma in Music Literacy (DipMusLCM).

These diplomas are suitable for post grade 8 students, aspiring piano teachers and musicians who wish to be equipped with the necessary qualifications for future endeavour or those who are purely after the satisfaction of achieving a personal goal.

Performance Diplomas

A natural progression for students after Grade 8, the piano performance diploma further improves the professional standard of performance and musical understanding.

ABRSM

 

ABRSM performance diplomas are well rounded with tasks that include compiling a balanced recital programme and finding editions that best suit your interpretation, talking with confidence about the music, and putting on the best possible performance on the day.

The Performance Diploma is available at three levels:

  • DipABRSM : Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree

  • LRSM : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

  • FRSM : Equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university (Masters degree)

Tasks include:

  • Recital

  • Viva Voce 

  • Quick Study

Trinity

Trinity’s performance diplomas provide a pathway to professional musicianship, focusing exclusively on the planning and performance of a recital. 

The Performance Diploma is available at three levels:

  • Trinity Associate (ATCL) : Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree

  • Licentiate (LTCL) : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

  • Fellowship (FTCL) : Equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university (Masters degree)

LCM

LCM performance diploma focuses on security of technique, and the ability to communicate tangible sense of interpretative awareness and musicianship.

The Performance Diploma is available at four levels:

  • DipLCM : Equivalent in standard to a first year undergraduate

  • ALCM : Equivalent in standard to the second year of an undergraduate degree

  • LLCM : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

  • FLCM : Equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university (Masters degree)

  • Concert

Teaching Diplomas

 Teaching diplomas are suitable for piano teachers and to those wish to become piano teachers. 

ABRSM

 

The focus of these diplomas is the teaching of piano as a practical activity. Through live and written sections, you will be examined in your approaches to teaching, your ability to give competent practical demonstrations in lessons and your understanding of repertoire. ABRSM teaching diplomas also cover educational theory and philosophy, curriculum studies and aspects of educational administration.

The Teaching Diploma is available at three levels:

  • DipABRSM : Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree

  • LRSM : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

  • FRSM : Equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university (Masters degree)

Trinity

Trinity teaching diplomas cover planning and delivering programmes of piano teaching appropriate to individuals and small groups from beginners to advanced players, and evaluate your own effectiveness as a teacher with full responsibility for the learning environment.

 

The Teaching Diploma is available at two levels:

  • Trinity Associate (ATCL) Principles of Instrumental: Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree

  • Licentiate (LTCL) Instrumental  : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

  1. Individual or small instrumental groups)

  2.  Music Practice: Teaching (classroom group)

  • Practical applications (demonstration, initiative test and viva voce)

LCM

LCM diploma focuses on demonstrating the skills and understanding required by a competent piano teacher that is accomplished and confident of teaching skills, your performance technique which demonstrate pieces with clarity and authority, and your ability to communicate appropriate knowledge and understanding with clear verbal articulacy. 

The Teaching Diploma is available at three levels:

  • DipLCM : Equivalent in standard to a first year undergraduate

  • ALCM : Equivalent in standard to the second year of an undergraduate degree

  • LLCM : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

 

Tasks include:

  • Teaching: live/recorded lesson

  • Presentation (DipLCM)/ Essay (ALCM)/ Dissertation (LLCM)

Theory Diplomas

Theory diplomas provide a very good supplement to diplomas in performance and teaching.

 

Note: ABRSM does not offer diploma level music theory exams.

Trinity

Trinity’s music theory diplomas require a broad understanding of theoretical and analytical concepts and procedures, in addition to a wide-ranging knowledge of music history in the Western classical tradition.

The Theory Diploma is available at two levels:

  • Trinity Associate (AMusTCL): Equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree

  • Licentiate (LMusTCL) : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

 

Tasks include:

  • Section A: Musical skills

  • Section B: Prescribed works

LCM

LCM balances traditional theoretical diploma components such as harmony and analysis with musicianship elements including comparison of recordings, performance practice considerations and essay writing. These components encourage candidates to explore contextual issues and their personal response to music.

The Theory Diploma is available at three levels:

  • DipMusLCM : Equivalent in standard to a first year undergraduate

  • AMusLCM : Equivalent in standard to the second year of an undergraduate degree

  • LMusLCM : Equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree

 

Tasks include:

  • Component 1: Stylistic composition

  • Component 2: Questions on a score

  • Component 3: Comparison of recordings

  • Component 4: Essay
